"Producing Censorship" exhibition at the Invisible Dog Art Center, Brooklyn, NY, November 2011

"The exciting work in this exhibition reflects and intervenes on the conditions of information production, exposing the apparatus of power and its relationship to new forms of censorship. The distinctive aesthetic strategies utilized by the artists confront the 'medium of the message" and provide extraordinary, alternative modes of seeing communication and its meaning."
- Curators Aria Spinelli and Jason Waite

Excerpt from Center to Edge catalogue essay by Stacy Switzer, written for the 2008 River City Biennale, June 2008:

Interestingly, the Hungarian-born artist Levente Sulyok has also zeroed-in on the oft-ignored space of advertising architectures, such as billboards and scaffolds, to explore the possibilities for agency and meaning in the curious liminal zones of these “non-places” or “non-sites.” Sulyok’s recent paintings on paper and canvas feature, among other things, an explosion at the top of a cell tower, an industrial scaffold buckling under the weight of a bloated crimson stain, and a billboard with a cryptic pun written in the Hungarian language (translation: “THIS SENTENCE CONSISTS OF WORDS”). Weaving a complex network of vocabularies—from Russian Constructivist designs to the utopian architectures of Buckminster Fuller, to the languages of global commerce, graffiti, interventionism and protest art—Sulyok’s works reconfigure the modern experience to uncover both darkness and humor at its core.
